Health Carousel Foundation Sponsors DAISY Awards for Nursing School Students and Faculty in Cameroon

Yaoundé, CMR (Dec 17, 2022) – The DAISY Foundation™, with support from Health Carousel's Light the Way initiative, is proud to announce the first recipients of the DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty and Nursing Students awarded on the African continent. Altogether three student nurses and two faculty members of EXHIST University were recognized.

The five DAISY Award recipients were honored at an award ceremony that was well-attended by the university's nursing school students, faculty, and Nelson Nche Ngang, EXHIST University’s managing director/CEO. Each award recipient received a DAISY certificate, pin, and a "Healer's Touch" statuette, all of which are underwritten by Health Carousel through its Light the Way initiative supporting nursing sustainability, development, and ethical recruitment practices globally.

"We are delighted to help bring the fantastic DAISY Award for extraordinary nursing professionals and students to new areas of the globe," commented Andrew Lingo, director of ethical recruitment and workforce sustainability for Health Carousel. "Recognition of work well done by nursing school professors and students is vital to the future of this country's healthcare system."

Nurse Recognition Key to Retention and Satisfaction Amid Tough Conditions

Cameroon faces a severe healthcare professional crisis and an overwhelming disease burden. For example, Cameroon has an estimated half a million people living with HIV, and malaria affects over three million people yearly. Additionally, maternal and infant mortality rates are high. Schools such as EXHIST University aim to improve the number of trained nurses and healthcare for citizens. Programs such as the DAISY Award aid in building and retaining the nursing workforce by providing much-needed recognition of their extraordinary efforts.

About The DAISY Foundation

The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by members of his family. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.) The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired the creation of The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, an evidence-based means of providing nurse recognition and thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families. Today, the Foundation expresses gratitude to the nursing profession internationally in over 5,600 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing through recognition programs that honor the super-human work nurses do wherever they practice, in whatever role they serve, and throughout their careers – from Nursing Student through Lifetime Achievement in Nursing and through the J. Patrick Barnes Grants for Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Projects, Health Equity Grants and Medical Mission Grants. More information is available at http://DAISYfoundation.org.
