Nurse Recognition Key to Retention and Satisfaction Amid Tough Conditions

Sub-Saharan Africa is faced with a severe healthcare professional crisis coupled with having an overwhelming disease burden.

The majority of the 57 countries listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as having a human resources for health crisis are from this region alone. The shortage of physicians is an especially pronounced constraint. As such, countries in sub-Saharan Africa have grown to increasingly rely on nurses.

In many countries such as Uganda, nurses constitute as high as 80% of the entire health workforce.

Programs such as the DAISY International Advocate program, underwritten by Health Carousel, aid in the retention of the nursing workforce through the provision of much needed recognition of their extraordinary efforts by peers, leadership, and the public.
