The Impact of the NANNNA Annual Scientific Conference

AUTHOR: Andrew Lingo, HCF Executive Director

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses in North America (NANNNA) held its annual Scientific Conference on Global Health last week, and I was proud and happy to attend. First, it was nice to have the Nigerian Nurses Association of Florida (NNAF) as the hosting chapter, as it meant a couple-day escape from the looming Ohio winter. Of course, that was the least impactful of my experiences!

My trip was my first time attending a NANNNA annual conference, and I have been remiss. It was larger than I had expected and very well organized. Secondly, and I cannot express this enough, the spirit of the Nigerian nurses and pride in their homeland shone through. This spirit was evident even in the conference theme, which was "Global Health Priorities: Clinical Excellence in Nursing Workforce."

Several sessions focused on the above theme by thinking beyond the world of nursing in the USA, extending to issues facing nurses in the Association members' homeland and the world. Speakers included:

  • Dr. Peter Preziosi - President/CEO of CGFNS
  • Dr. Farouk Abubakar - CEO/Registrar Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria
  • Dame Obianuju Francisca Okafor - Director of Nursing, Federal Ministry of Health Nigeria
  • Dr. Katie Boston-Leary - Director of Nursing, ANA

And many others who are leading NANNNA and its members to be excellent and scientific nurses.

A highlight of my time in attendance was a meeting with the NANNNA Board, during which we discussed how our Nurse Educator Scholarship program may proceed in 2024, along with a discussion of several other ways to support Nigerian nurses in their homeland.

Thank you to the NANNNA Board and the association members for organizing such a meaningful event and being gracious hosts.

I look forward to the 2024 NANNNA Annual Scientific Conference.
